# About Katagami

This page explains why Katagami was made, where its name comes from and how katagami paper stencils are cut. It also lists the credits.

Kevin Liu started Katagami on 7 October 2026 to make one type family that feels like a coherent system. It has a sans, a rounded sans, a reading face, a serif and a mono on one skeleton. Katagami starts from Inter's open-source outlines. Its merged scripts and CJK companions come from Noto. The name comes from katagami, the Japanese paper stencils that are cut to dye patterns on cloth. The Japanese word 型紙 means pattern paper.

The [katagami stencils page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/katagami-stencils) has more about the stencils.
