The rewrite runs in your browser. Font-ify replaces a monospace stack with Katagami Mono and a serif stack with Katagami Serif. Icon fonts and `var()` stacks stay as they are, and every other stack becomes the member you pick. The original stack stays behind Katagami as its fallback. A site opens directly from an address such as https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/convert?url=example.com. # About Katagami This page explains why Katagami was made, where its name comes from and how katagami paper stencils are cut. It also lists the credits. Kevin Liu started Katagami on 7 October 2026 to make one type family that feels like a coherent system. It has a sans, a rounded sans, a reading face, a serif and a mono on one skeleton. Katagami starts from Inter's open-source outlines. Its merged scripts and CJK companions come from Noto. The name comes from katagami, the Japanese paper stencils that are cut to dye patterns on cloth. The Japanese word 型紙 means pattern paper. The [katagami stencils page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/katagami-stencils) has more about the stencils. # Katagami FAQ ## Is Katagami free to use? Katagami is free. It is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. You can use it in any product, commercial or not, embed it in apps, documents and websites, and change it. Keep the license with the font files when you share them, and give a changed version a new name. The license does not allow selling the fonts on their own. ## Which member should I use? Katagami Sans is for interfaces and display. It has squared bowls, level cuts and square punctuation. Katagami Round squares its bowls less and rounds every corner, so interfaces read softer. Katagami Text is for long reading, with a lower x-height and tighter spacing. Katagami Serif is Text with rectangular serifs. Katagami Mono is for code, terminals and tables. All five share one skeleton, so they mix on one page. ## How do I use Katagami on a website? Link the stylesheet, then set the family in your CSS. The fonts are served from this site with open CORS, and each script has its own file, so a page loads only what it shows. <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts/katagami.css"> body { font-family: "Katagami Sans", system-ui, sans-serif; } To host the files yourself, take the fonts from the download page. ## How do I turn OpenType features on? Use font-feature-settings with the feature's tag, or the matching font-variant property where CSS has one. .price { font-feature-settings: "tnum"; } .legal { font-variant-caps: small-caps; } The features page shows each feature with the characters it changes, and copies its CSS. ## Which languages does Katagami set? Katagami draws Latin, Greek and Cyrillic itself. It merges 19 more scripts, among them Devanagari, Arabic, Ethiopic and Khmer, from open-source outlines under the same license. Chinese, Japanese and Korean come from the four Katagami CJK companions. Together they set the main language of places where 99.9 percent of people live. The map shows where. ## Are there italics? Katagami has no italics yet. Version 0.1 is upright in every member, and italics come after hand corrections to the uprights. A browser asked for italic slants the upright to fake it. ## Is there a non-variable version? Each member is one variable font with a weight axis. The files name every weight from Thin to Black, and Katagami Mono from Thin to Bold. Apps that do not handle variable fonts list those weights as separate styles. ## What is Font-ify? Font-ify fetches a page and rewrites every font declaration with one fixed set of rules. It sets code in Katagami Mono, serif text in Katagami Serif and the rest in the member you pick, and it leaves icon fonts alone. The rewrite runs in your browser. A bookmarklet does the same on the page you are reading. ## How is Katagami made? The build scripts in the repository produce every glyph from open-source outlines. They square or round the curves, cut the widths and terminals, and compile each member to a variable font. Nothing is drawn by hand yet, and hand corrections come next. The design spec lists every decision and its numbers, and About tells where it started. ## Why is it called Katagami? Katagami are Japanese paper stencils for dyeing cloth, and the word 型紙 means pattern paper. The family is also made by cutting. Its curves are squared, its terminals are cut level, and its K is a square with three cuts. About has the rest. ## Where do I report a problem or ask a question? Open an issue on GitHub with the member, the weight, the characters and a screenshot. Pull requests to the build scripts are welcome. # Download Katagami Katagami 0.1 has five variable TrueType fonts and four CJK companions. This makes horizontals thinner than stems. ## Coverage Katagami Serif has 6,580 characters and covers 22 scripts. You can use it in commercial and non-commercial products. ## What the license allows - You can use the fonts in commercial and non-commercial apps, websites, documents, print, video and logos. - You can embed the fonts in software and documents. - You can change the fonts and share your changed version. - You can bundle the fonts with other software, including software you sell. ## What it asks - Keep the license and the copyright notices with the font files when you share them. - Give a changed version a new name. - Do not sell the fonts on their own. - Release a changed version under the same license. ## Questions **Can I use Katagami in a logo?** You can use Katagami in a logo. The license covers use of the fonts in logos, and it does not apply to what you make with them. **Do I need to credit Katagami?** The license does not require credit in what you make. Keep the license with the font files if you share the files. **Can I host the fonts on my own server?** You can host the fonts on your own server. Self-hosting shares the files with your visitors' browsers, and the license allows that. Keep the license file next to the fonts. **Where is the license?** The license is in the repository as [OFL.txt](https://github.com/Kevin-Liu-01/Katagami/blob/main/OFL.txt) and at [openfontlicense.org](https://openfontlicense.org/). --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/free-for-commercial-use # Variable fonts A variable font stores a design's extremes in one file and lets the renderer draw any point between them. ## How Katagami uses it Each Katagami member is one variable TrueType file with a weight axis called `wght`. The axis runs from 100 to 900 in four members and from 100 to 700 in Katagami Mono. The build draws three masters named Thin, Regular and Black. All three have the same points in the same order, and the font interpolates between them. > Thin 100 · Regular 400 · Black 900 ## Named styles The files also name their styles. Katagami Sans, Round, Text and Serif name nine styles, which are Thin, ExtraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, Bold, ExtraBold and Black. Katagami Mono names the seven from Thin to Bold. Apps that do not handle variable fonts list the named styles as separate styles. ## Weights in CSS CSS can set any weight on the axis, such as 650. ```css .title { font-family: "Katagami Sans"; font-weight: 650; } ``` A transition on `font-weight` animates the weight. The footer of this site uses one. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/variable-fonts # OpenType features OpenType features are substitutions that a font carries and a browser applies on request. They include figure styles, small capitals, alternate letters and ligatures. ## Turning them on Use the `font-variant` property where CSS has one, and `font-feature-settings` with the four-letter tag for the rest. ```css .price { font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums; } .legal { font-variant-caps: small-caps; } .code { font-feature-settings: "dlig"; } ``` ## Common tags | Tag | Name | CSS | |---|---|---| | tnum | Tabular figures | font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums | | frac | Fractions | font-variant-numeric: diagonal-fractions | | smcp | Small capitals | font-variant-caps: small-caps | | case | Case-sensitive forms | font-feature-settings: "case" | | zero | Slashed zero | font-variant-numeric: slashed-zero | | ss01 to ss20 | Stylistic sets | font-feature-settings: "ss01" | | cv01 to cv99 | Character variants | font-feature-settings: "cv01" | | dlig | Discretionary ligatures | font-variant-ligatures: discretionary-ligatures | ## Katagami's features Katagami Sans has 41 features you can switch. The [features page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/features) shows every one off and on in each member. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/opentype-features # Squared curves A quarter arc sits in a box whose corner is where its two end tangents meet. The handle fraction f is how far each handle reaches toward that corner. ## The numbers | Curve | Handle fraction f | Superellipse exponent n | |---|---|---| | Circle | 0.552 | 2.00 | | Katagami Text | 0.59 | 2.13 | | Katagami Round | 0.69 | 2.43 | | Katagami Sans | 0.73 | 2.62 | A larger f reaches further toward the corner and reads as squarer. The exponent n of the superellipse with the same reach is `n = -1 / log2(0.375 f + 0.5)`. ## How Katagami squares a bowl The build moves each curve's handles toward the corner by a share of the remaining distance. In Katagami Sans the share is 0.36 in capitals and 0.32 in lowercase. The build also condenses round letters, so the squared corners carry the area that the narrower width removes. The [Curves table on the home page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/#curves) measures f from the outlines in your browser. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/squared-curves # Katagami stencils Katagami are paper stencils for dyeing cloth. The Japanese word 型紙 means “pattern paper.” Cutters in Shiroko and Jike in Suzuka, Mie, have made them for more than five hundred years. ## How a stencil is made - Sheets of washi are bonded with kakishibu. Kakishibu is a fermented persimmon tannin that turns the paper brown and tough. - A cutter carves the pattern through the layers. - A fine silk net holds the loose pieces in place. - Rice paste goes through the holes onto the cloth, the cloth is dyed, and the paste washes out to leave the pattern white. ## Four ways to cut | Cut | How | |---|---| | Kiribori | A semicircular blade turned against the paper punches round holes. A square centimetre holds up to about a hundred of them. | | Tsukibori | The knife is pushed away from the cutter through every layer at once. This cut makes free lines and curves. | | Dōgubori | Punches ground to a shape press out the same flower or diamond again and again. | | Shimabori | Stripes are cut along a ruler, and each stripe is traced three times with a small blade. | ## The type family The typeface took the name because it is made by cutting. Its curves are squared, its terminals are cut level, and its K is cut from a square. The [About page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/about) has the story and a stencil you can cut with your own word. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/katagami-stencils # Fonts in coding agents A coding agent that runs in a terminal prints in the terminal's font. The agent picks the characters, and the terminal picks how they look. ## What an agent prints An agent's interface is text in a grid of cells. Around the code and the prose it draws panels and tables with box-drawing characters, progress with block elements, spinners with Braille patterns, and steps and results with arrows, check marks and bullets. ```text ╭─ plan ─────────────────────╮ │ ⠋ reading 12 files │ │ ✓ tests pass ▕████▌ │ │ → edit src/fonts.ts │ ╰────────────────────────────╯ ``` When the font lacks one of these characters, the terminal draws it from another font. That font usually has another width, so the columns after the character stop lining up. ## What the font needs - Symbols have the same cell width as every other glyph. - The 0 and O are drawn apart, and so are 1, l and I, because agents print hashes, IDs, tokens and paths that people copy. - Ligatures are off until you turn them on, so `->` and `!=` show the characters the agent wrote and a diff shows what changed. - The font itself has the box-drawing, block and Braille ranges. - The weights stay legible when an interface bolds a heading or dims a note. ## Katagami Mono | Range | Code points | Used for | Katagami Mono | |---|---|---|---| | Box drawing | U+2500 to U+257F | panels, borders and tables | 128 of 128 | | Block elements | U+2580 to U+259F | progress bars and meters | 32 of 32 | | Braille patterns | U+2800 to U+28FF | spinners such as ⠋⠙⠹⠸⠼⠴⠦⠧⠇⠏ | 256 of 256 | | Arrows | U+2190 to U+21FF | steps, moves and keys | 28 of 112 | Katagami Mono draws the status characters ⏺ ⎿ ✓ ✗ ✔ ✘ ● ○ ◉ ◆ ▶ ▸ › … ⏵ ⏸ ⏹ ⚠ ✕ ★ ☆ ✻ ✢ ✳ ✶ ✽ • → ← ↑ ↓. Its cell is 1,280 units wide, which is 0.625 em. Code ligatures for `->`, `=>`, `!=`, `==` and `>=` stay off until you turn on `dlig`, and each character in a ligature keeps its own cell. ## Terminal settings | Terminal | Setting | |---|---| | Ghostty | `font-family = "Katagami Mono"` in `~/.config/ghostty/config` | | Kitty | `font_family Katagami Mono` in `kitty.conf` | | WezTerm | `config.font = wezterm.font("Katagami Mono")` | | Alacritty | `family = "Katagami Mono"` under `[font.normal]` | | iTerm2 | Settings, Profiles, Text, Font | | Windows Terminal | `"font": { "face": "Katagami Mono" }` in a profile | | VS Code and Cursor | `"terminal.integrated.fontFamily": "Katagami Mono"` | | Zed | `"terminal": { "font_family": "Katagami Mono" }` | Install `KatagamiMono[wght].ttf` from the [download page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/download) first, then restart the terminal. [Agent-native fonts](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/agent-native-fonts) covers what an agent needs to find and install a font on its own. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/fonts-in-coding-agents # Agent-native fonts An agent-native font is one an agent can find, read about, install and set up without a person in between. Katagami publishes what an agent needs as plain text at stable addresses. ## What an agent needs | Need | On this site | |---|---| | Text it can read | Every page has a Markdown twin at the same address with `.md`, and a request that sends `Accept: text/markdown` gets it. | | An index | [/llms.txt](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/llms.txt) lists every page, and [/llms-full.txt](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/llms-full.txt) holds every page except the language pages in one file. | | A license it can act on | The SIL Open Font License 1.1 allows bundling the fonts into a repository, an app or a site, so an agent can add them to a project. | | Stable addresses | The stylesheet is at `/fonts/katagami.css` with open CORS, and [/download/files.json](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/download/files.json) lists every font file with its size. | | Facts as data | Each member's metrics, characters and OpenType features are in `/data.js`. | | Shared line metrics | Every member has the same line metrics. The ascender is 1984 and the descender is -494 on a 2048-unit em, so swapping one member for another does not move the lines. | ## A prompt for a coding agent ```text Set this project's fonts to Katagami. Read https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/llms.txt first. Link https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts/katagami.css and use "Katagami Sans" for interface text, "Katagami Serif" for long reading and "Katagami Mono" for code, each with a system fallback. Leave code ligatures off. Change nothing else. ``` The prompt names the stylesheet and the families and limits the change, so the diff stays small enough to review. ## The machine view The Machine switch at the top of every page shows the page as an agent reads it. The switch shows the page's Markdown twin set in Katagami Mono. ## Agents in the terminal Agents that run in a terminal print in the terminal's font. [Fonts in coding agents](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/fonts-in-coding-agents) covers what that font has to draw and how to set it. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/agent-native-fonts # Library The library has a page for each member, comparisons with other typefaces, guides and explainers. Katagami draws its own Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. It merges 19 scripts from the Noto Sans fonts and scales them to Katagami's x-height. ## Guides - [Monospace fonts for code](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts-for/coding): A monospace font for code needs one width for every character, distinct look-alike characters and ligatures you can turn off. Katagami Mono, JetBrains Mono, Fira Code, IBM Plex Mono, Geist Mono and Berkeley Mono are compared on license, weights, axes and features. - [Fonts for interfaces](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts-for/interfaces): An interface font needs tabular figures, distinct look-alike characters, enough weights, coverage for your languages and a license for embedding. Katagami Sans and Round are compared with Inter, Geist, Roboto, SF Pro and IBM Plex Sans. - [Fonts for long reading](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts-for/reading): Long text needs a moderate x-height, spacing set for body sizes and bold weights that stay open. Katagami Text and Katagami Serif are free typefaces for articles, documentation and books. - [Fonts for many languages](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/fonts-for/many-languages): Katagami sets the main language of places where 99.9 percent of people live. It draws Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, merges 19 more scripts and sets Chinese, Japanese and Korean with companion fonts. - [Commercial use](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/free-for-commercial-use): Katagami is free for commercial use under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The license allows use in apps, websites and print, and it asks you to keep the license with the files and to rename changed versions. ## Explainers - [Variable fonts](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/variable-fonts): A variable font holds a whole range of a design in one file. Katagami's weight axis runs from 100 to 900, its files name their styles, and CSS can set any weight in between. - [OpenType features](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/opentype-features): OpenType features are substitutions that a font carries and a browser applies on request. CSS turns them on with font-variant and font-feature-settings, and Katagami Sans has 41 features you can switch. - [Squared curves](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/squared-curves): How far a curve's handles reach toward its corner decides how square a bowl looks. A table gives the handle fraction f for a circle and for Katagami Text, Round and Sans. - [Katagami stencils](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/katagami-stencils): Katagami are Japanese paper stencils for dyeing cloth, and the word 型紙 means pattern paper. They are cut by hand in Suzuka with four cutting methods. - [Fonts in coding agents](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/fonts-in-coding-agents): Coding agents print their interface as text in a terminal grid. The font has to draw their box-drawing, block, Braille and status characters at one cell width, and each terminal has its own setting for Katagami Mono. - [Agent-native fonts](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/learn/agent-native-fonts): An agent needs readable text, an index, a license it can act on, stable addresses and facts as data before it can use a font. Katagami publishes each of these and offers a prompt for a coding agent. ## Scripts The [scripts page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/scripts) lists every script in Katagami and whether it is drawn, merged or set by a companion font. ## Languages The [languages page](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/languages) lists every language on the map, and each of the 234 languages has its own page. ## Machine-readable text Every page has a Markdown twin at the same address with `.md`. The file [llms.txt](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/llms.txt) lists every page, and [llms-full.txt](https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/llms-full.txt) holds every page except the language pages in one file. --- Source: https://katagami.kevinliu.studio/library
